A novel 1,3,4-thiadiazole modified chitosan: synthesis, characterization, antimicrobial activity, and release study from film dressings

Abstract Herein, two new polymers designated as Cs-EATT and Cs-BATT have been synthesized via linking the chitosan with 1,3,4-thiadiazole compounds. They were characterized using 1 H, 13 C-NMR, FT-IR, TGA, Elemental analysis, Mass spectrum, UV–vis spectrophotometer. The exhibit high activity to control growth of pathogenic bacteria ( S. aureus , B. subtilis E. coli, P. aeruginosa ), unicellular fungi C. albicans ). MIC values in range 25–100 µg mL –1 for 25–200 varied clear zones. mixed three film-forming agents: polyvinyl alcohol, hydroxyethyl cellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose form six film dressings E1, E2, E3 Cs-EATT, B1, B2, B3 Cs-BATT, respectively. evaluation showed that formed films had transparency, uniformity, homogeneity, elasticity, non-irritation pH skin within normal range. maximum percentages Cs-E/B-ATT content recorded E2 92.5% 94.9%, Also, release according dressing formulation, ranges 83.88–93.2% (87.7–97.35%) after 9 h.
